Blackberries...and we don't mean your phones

This week we have wonderful wild blackberry branches for your bouquets! Include blackberries in your next flower arrangement, to add a very unique touch...something you've probably never seen before.

Flower Bar has also been carrying a variety of wild basil. This basil is VERY hearty, smells great, and acts as a beautiful greenery to just about any arrangement. In fact we used our locally grown basil as the primary greenery in a recent wedding, and had rave reviews!

Tips Planning Your Wedding Flowers

The wedding rush is upon us again. We're meeting with lots of new brides and planning out our 2009 events. Some brides we meet already have very detailed ideas about their flowers, whereas others haven't yet picked out their colors. We enjoy planning wedding decor with every bride, at every stage...but it occurred to me that it might be a useful tool to post a few tips to think about when meeting with a florist for your wedding.

Color- Most colors can be found year round-- if you really have to have them-- but it will be better on the budget if you stick to what's in season. White is always available and always makes for a beautiful wedding, but if you want to add color, here are some suggestions for each season.

Seasonal Colors:
Spring: light pinks, purples, yellows. blues
Summer: dark pinks, dark purples, reds, peaches
Fall: oranges, greens, peaches, purples
Winter: reds, greens, yellows, browns

Roses vs. No Roses- For Flower Bar, roses are one of the most economical ways to achieve a soft and petally look, if you like them. We've done plenty of weddings where there were no roses included, but still most brides want (or don't mind) roses within the mix. An all-rose bridal bouquet would cost probably half of what it would using most other flowers. The key is to use a good florist who will condition the rose over several days so that it is at a perfect full bloom. Rose buds are not as petally and romantic. One other tip about roses, is to use a color "pallet." Combine dark and light oranges with peaches, or a combination of three of four shades of pink!

Table centerpieces- One of the most important items on your list that will "make or break" your flower budget, will be your table centerpieces. Most Flower Bar table centerpieces range between $45-$85 per table for the "low" arrangements, and $85-$125+ for the "tall centerpieces." There are plenty of ways to substitute different containers or different flowers to get your look on a budget, just ask your florist for suggestions. Flower Bar also rents vases, and containers to lower your cost, but consider whether or not you want your guests to take home your arrangements.

Ceremony Arrangements- Most couples have two or more large ceremony arrangements for the exchanging of vows. Re-purpose those pieces as buffet centerpieces, or entryway arrangements, or DJ decor at the reception. Flower Bar rents urns and columns, or candelabras for your ceremony flowers. We'll move them to your reception if it is in a different location than the ceremony.

Hopefully these couple of tips are useful to you. Stay tuned for more flower planning tips.....I have lot of them!

Danielle and Jacob Wedding

Danielle and Jacob got married this past Saturday, July 12th. We've been looking forward to doing this event for a good while now, and have already heard back from the Bride, via the Wedding Coordinator, that she was very pleased. When I went back to pick up our rented Urns and Columns today, the Church coordinator said all the ladies commented that the wedding flowers were some of the prettiest they had seen...which of course makes me very happy~

We used mostly all whites for Danielle and Jacob, with just a hint of blush here and there. Here are a couple of photos (yes we actually took a some pictures this time!!) until we can get copies of the professional images from their photographer.
(Above)- The Bride's Bouquet: White freesia, ranunculus, roses, stock and blush peonies.

<<- The Bridesmaid's Bouquets (there were 9 of them!): White roses, stock and freesia with blush roses.

And below are the table centerpieces. One version was larger than the other as they had 8-top tables and 4-top tables in two separate rooms. White Casablanca lilies, stock, lisianthus, roses and white hydrangea with a tint of blush petals here and there (nature wanted them to have blush!)

<<- ...and I can't resist, Spiderman (aka my friends adorable son, Albert) came by to "help" out with the wedding flowers while he had lunch at our Irwin Street Market. He's very carefully posing with the Bride's bouquet.

Kia's Wedding Bouquet

I'll keep this entry short and sweet. Look at the pretty colors in Bride Kia's bouquet! She chose her bouquet from one of our wedding books. I just love the shades of these roses together.
Kia had a quaint ceremony on June 29th at The King Keith House here in Inman Park. It's an adorable B&B with room to host a smaller wedding of up to 50 people. Also a great place to host out of town guests!

Our Paisley Party was a HIT!

Last night the women in business at Paisley Umbrella hosted a showcase party, along with some invited outside vendors. We had fabulous guests, music, food, and of course everything you need to plan your dream wedding at your fingertips!

Behind the boutique, in our garden area was a tent showcasing four different themed wedding settings including "Classic," "Modern," "Romantic," and "Whimsical." See below for pictures of our collaborations.

These tablescapes were in part coordinated by Ashley Baber Weddings, and featured centerpieces by Flower Bar (of course!), china and stemware by Bloomingdale's, linens by Classic Party Rentals, dresses by Olive, shoes by Ann Roth Shoes, jewelry by Nicola, invitations by Bubble Bee Press, and place cards by MM Ink Calligraphy.

Kate and Brad Get Married!

This week we had the pleasure of working on both the Rehearsal Dinner and Wedding of Kate and Brad. They are a lovely couple, with great vision and ideas of the soft romantic look they wanted to create.

Here's a photo of their Rehearsal Dinner floral ring and hurricane centerpieces. Thanks to Marilyn, Kate's new Mother in Law, for being so easy to work with! We like how it turned out.

Kate and Brad's June 19th Wedding took place at The Houston Mill House, a wonderful gardeny location in the Decatur, GA area. We've done events here before and the staff is remarkably organized and helpful. They have a wonderful garden area for ceremonies, a historic home and beautiful back terrace for receptions.

The Wedding:

The one thing I am admittedly TERRIBLE at is getting pictures of our wedding bouquets and arrangements the day of the wedding. We rely on the photographers for professional shots but I'm terrible about following up with them as well....always moving on to the next event. This picture shown is of one of their table centerpieces-- the day after. They wanted a soft and petally romantic feel for their wedding dinner tables.

The outside terrace was decorated "understated but elegant" says Marilyn, with soft petally bud vase bouquets, an arrangement for the bar, and ivory hanging paper lanterns in the trees (operated by batteries- no hanging cords!).

My lighting expert, Sully overheard the Houston Mill House staff say our event was the prettiest this season! We can't wait to be back in touch with the Bride and Groom to hear all about their night!

Dayton's Proposal

One of the things I love the most about running a flower shop, is getting to peak into the romance of different people's lives. One of the most romantic times in people's lives is when a man proposes to a woman. So of course, I LOVE getting the phone call about a guy needing help with his plans to propose!

This past Memorial Day weekend, we got a call from Dayton. He told me his plan, and I got just as excited as I would if a brother called, telling me about asking his girlfriend to marry him. Dayton had a couple of logistical obstacles, which we helped him with, but here's how he popped the question!

Dayton's girlfriend Lindsey received an email on Saturday morning, telling her to make the trip from Newnan (where they live) to our flower shop to begin a little scavenger hunt. She has GPS, so she was to program in a new destination with each stop.

At about 2pm, Lindsey walked into Flower Bar pretty confused. She said she wasn't sure why she was there. I gave her the bouquet Dayton ordered (see picture) along with a card, and a gift certificate to Victoria Secret. The card had the store's address on it and note to shop for something she liked. After her shopping spree, she received instructions to go to The Embassy Suites downtown at Centennial Park.

At the hotel, she received a room key, where a masseuse would be on call for a nice massage. When she was done, her final instructions were to walk down to Centennial Park and look for Dayton. There he would propose! Their final stop- dinner at Ruth Chris Steak House downtown. Isn't it oh so romantic!!?

Thank you to Dayton for letting us post about his big day.

...I wonder if they are planning their wedding flowers yet.

The Two Steves....

Customer Update: Yesterday I received a call from a gentleman who ordered flowers from us a couple of months ago....he reminded me of his story. His name is Steve and he was ordering flowers for his wife's birthday. Steve was planning several days ahead of time, and we chatted a couple of times about what to send his wife to make a great impression.

When Steve placed his order he signed the card "Love Steve (The one from Florida)". He explained a story about how he and his wife had wondered if the wife's ex-boyfriend (also named Steve!) would send her Birthday wishes on her special day...so he put the little note at the end of his card to clarify, just in case.

On the day of the delivery, I got a call from Husband Steve. The wife was very disappointed. He mentioned that we had such great customer service, and he enjoyed planning the arrangement with us, and therefore was even more disappointed that she didn't like the flowers. I, of course, panicked. People don't complain about our arrangements! I told him we'd make good, or give him his money back, etc.

An hour or so later, he called me back. The ex-boyfriend Steve had in fact sent his wife the "ugly" flowers....PHEW! Our more gorgeous arrangement came just an hour later, and she loved it! His phone call yesterday was to order more flowers.

Thanks Husband Steve, for letting me blog about your story (and for reminding me about it yesterday), and for ordering more flowers from Flower Bar!! We hope we will continue to impress!

Adapting to Growth

We love our neighborhood. There's so much growth in retail and residential, it's pretty fantastic to be a part of it! This past weekend we sponsored centerpieces for the neighborhood's Butterfly Ball just before the Inman Park Festival weekend.

Flower Bar has been growing so fast, we invited our other neighborhood florist, Adaptation, to join us in the sponsorship, and to collectively come up with an inexpensive centerpiece that was Eco-Friendly, in theme with the event. It turned out to be a really positive experience, and I had fun collaborating with Liz and Mike. Thanks guys!

Here's what we did.

Together we decided to use draught resistant plants like sedum, succulents, and a touch of healthy wheatgrass. Our containers were baskets made from reclaimed birch wood and recycled plastic box straps. Then we finished them with a touch of mood and sheet moss. We were all very pleased with the results and hope that our neighbors are enjoying the arrangements!

We're Growing Like a Weed!

I am so thrilled to announce we've grown...Again! Last week our new production space was completed. The new space is in the building just behind our shop at Irwin Street Market, and it's where we'll create the magic for our larger events, and holiday volume.

We also just purchased a fabulous van (in great condition!) from another florist whom I admire very much! Chuck Henry is a idol in my eyes, his talent is vast and his work has adorned the main entrance of the Southeastern Flower Show the last two years. After taking a director position at the SEFS, Chuck doesn't need the van as much, and I'm happy to adopt it....mojo and all!
